Self-employed National Insurance rates:
You usually pay 2 types of National Insurance if you are self-employed:
- Class 2 if your profits are £6,725 or more a year
- Class 4 if your profits are £12,570 or more a year
How much you pay:

Class 2 | £3.45 per week |
Class 4 | 9% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 2% on profits over £50,270 |
If your profit is lower than £6,725 you still can pay voluntary National Insurance to avoid gaps in National Insurance record.
Gaps can mean you will not have enough years of National Insurance contributions to get the full State Pension (sometimes called qualifying years)

Class 4 contributions paid by self-employed people with a profit of £12,570 or more do not usually count towards state benefits.
