Unique Tax Reference - UTR
A UTR number (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a ten digit number issued by HM Revenue and Customs, and is used to identify individual Tax payers within their system.
There are a number of different people who must be registered for Self Assessment, send Self Assessment Tax Return and pay Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions on their taxable income:
- Self-employed sole traders who earned more than £1,000
- Limited company directors
- Shareholders receiving more than £1000 income from dividends (2024/25 tax year)
- Partners in partnership
- Employees claiming expenses in excess of £2,500 for the tax year
- Any individual with an annual income over £100,000
- Anyone who receives rental income above £2,500 from UK property or land
Deadlines:
If you need to register for Self Assessment, you must do so before 5 October after the end of the relevant tax year. For example: the registration deadline for the 2024/2025 tax year (6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025) is 5 October 2025

UTR Cancellation
What we offer
If you have stopped trading as a sole trader or you are ending or leaving a business partnership, we can stop your UTR number
Stop Being Self Employed
You must tell HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if you have stopped trading as a sole trader or you are ending or leaving a business partnership.
If you will earn £1,000 or less in this tax year you do not need to be registered as self-employed.
But you can choose to stay registered to:
- Prove you are self-employed, for example to claim Tax Free Childcare
- Make voluntary Class 2 National Insurance payments to avoid gaps in your record. Gaps can mean you will not have enough years of National Insurance Contributions to get full State Pension or be able to get income based benefits (such as Maternity Allowance, Jobseeker's Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, etc.)
